The ALP is Australia's oldest political party. It is a social democratic party which is formally linked to the trade union movement.
At the national level Labor has been in government since 2007.
At the state and territory level, since 2002 Labor has been in government in all six states and both mainland territories - the first time Labor has achieved this.
The party's current federal parliamentary leader is Kevin Rudd.
