The Liberal Party of Australia was founded in 1944, and since then has been the dominant party of the centre-right in Australia. It was originally formed to compete with the centre-left Australian Labor Party for political office, both at the Federal level and in the Australian states and territories.

The Liberals traditionally form a Coalition with The Nationals to oppose the Australian Labor Party.

In federal politics, the Liberal Party is currently in opposition, after having held power from 1996 to 2007. The Liberals are also in opposition in all Australian states and territories.
